here are some photos that i uploaded awhile ago.  you can look at them as such or you can click on one and it gets bigger.  or you can look at them in sets.  under my name, there´s a button that says “sets”…if you click on that, the photos are slightly more organized.

i should be working at the moment. i´ve got lots to do and i´m determined not to work tomorrow. there´s a basketball tournament in a town 2 hours away that my team is playing in. they played today as well, but i was working on crop rotations for chiaucingo. there is a lot of math involved when working out crop rotations, which is really rather unfortunate. math. ugh.

we´re going to eat one of the doves that runs about the floor of the kitchen. it was hanging by its feet, defeathered yesterday. rather startling to come upon. it seems that we´re in baby season again. there are lots of chicks and turkey chicks (what are they called?) and a number of puppies running about and two perfectly adorable goat kids next door.

wednesday liz and i went to chiaucingo to show the women how to double dig. the ground is impressively hard. we went to teticic on thursday….and there the ground was even harder. lots of rocks. and, additionally, it is quite hot here right now. i´m told it´s actually not that hot, i need to wait for april and may for the real hotness. i´ve got a nice tan going…people tease me, telling me i´m going to be morenita when i leave…essentially, brown-skinned. funny how we always want to look different than we do. people here want lighter skin. i´m perfectly fine with a tan.

this is going to be a very busy week.

music

there is one radio station here in Olinalá.  although i´m sure many disadvantages come to mind promptly, the one main advantage is that you get surround sound as you drive around town.  it´s really quite delightful.  today as i was walking by the mechanics at the bottom of my hill, a Coldplay song came on.  i don´t get to hear much american music other than hip-hop in the disco and rap in cars that drive by.  neither of these genres are in my usual music repertoire.  so when the Coldplay song came on, i was almost disappointed to keep walking.  but, luckily for me, my front neighbor had the radio on as well, so i got a continuation and, lo and behold, my back neighbor had the radio on too!  i was able to hear the nearly the entire song, even though i was moving at a decent pace.

i was in Mexico City this past weekend and the only way i know how to get around in that metropolis is by metro.  people frequently sell candies, pens, movies and music on the metro.  the music people carry around backpacks that are actually just portable speakers and discman.  they blast the music and change songs very rapidly.  i made my first metro purchase this past monday and i am quite pleased with this acquisition.  i believe i now own about every popular song that i have every heard here.  popular songs are played here with the same repetition that popular songs in the states are played.  but here i get to dance to them too.

oh, the memories that music can bring back with just a few notes.
